The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Sofas: Say Goodbye to Stains, Dust, and Pet Hair
Your sofa is the centerpiece of your living room, a place where you relax, entertain guests, and maybe even snuggle with your furry friends. Over time, however, it can accumulate dirt, dust, and pet hair, making it look and feel less inviting. But fear not! With the right tools and techniques, you can easily clean your sofa and restore it to its former glory. In this guide, I'll show you how to clean your sofa, remove pet hair with a my favorite tool, and even tackle those stubborn stains.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin cleaning, gather the necessary supplies:
- Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment
- Lint roller or pet hair remover
- Mild detergent and Washing Soda
- Bathtub or large basin (if your sofa covers are removable)
- Water
Step 2: Remove Loose Debris
Start by removing any loose debris, such as crumbs or pet hair, from the sofa. Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to gently vacuum the surface of the sofa, paying special attention to crevices and seams where debris tends to accumulate. I use the Chom Chom roller to get rid of pet hair and it’s the best. You can also use a lint brush.
Step 3: Soak Couch Covers in the Bathtub
If your sofa covers are removable, you can give them a thorough cleaning by soaking them in the bathtub. Fill the bathtub with warm water and add a small amount of mild detergent and washing soda. Place the sofa covers in the bathtub and agitate them gently to loosen dirt and stains. Allow the covers to soak for about 30 minutes, then drain the bathtub and rinse the covers thoroughly with clean water. Then run them through the gentle cycle of your wash. Hang the covers to air dry before putting them back on the sofa.
Step 4: Clean Non-removable Covers
If your sofa covers are not removable, you can still clean them using a cleaner specifically designed for upholstery. This cleaner is our favorite and I just add a cap of my Thieves cleaner with the water. We don’t use any chemicals to clean in our home and this is perfect!
Step 5: Maintain Regularly
To keep your sofa looking its best, it's important to maintain it regularly. Vacuum the sofa once a week to remove dust and debris, and spot clean any stains as soon as they occur. Consider using a sofa cover or throw to protect the sofa from spills and pet hair.
If you’re looking for a couch with removable covers, the Ikea Ektorp is our favorite! We have it in three different versions and highly recommend it!
