Things I No Longer Buy At The Store: Paper Napkins

Why I Ditched Paper Napkins for Good

When I made the decision to stop buying paper napkins, I wasn’t entirely sure how it would go. Would it be inconvenient? Would my family actually use cloth napkins? Now, years later, I can confidently say it’s one of the simplest swaps I’ve made in my home—and it’s been so worth it.

Here’s why I ditched paper napkins for cloth ones and why I think you might love the change too.

1. Cloth Napkins Are Easier to Use

One of the first things I noticed after making the switch is that cloth napkins are just better to use. They stay in your lap without sliding off, they’re larger and more absorbent, and they feel more substantial in your hands. No more fumbling with flimsy paper napkins that tear at the worst moment. Whether it’s wiping hands or catching a drip, cloth napkins do the job better.

2. They Teach Kids Good Habits

Switching to cloth napkins has been a great way to teach my kids how to use a real napkin—something they’ll need to know at restaurants, dinner parties, and beyond. It’s a small way to add a touch of formality and manners to family meals, and it’s been a great learning tool for them. Even when they have their friends over, they comment on our napkins! It makes it feel fancy every night, even if we are just having pizza!

3. They’re Better for the Planet

The environmental impact of paper napkins is significant. From the resources needed to produce them to the waste they create, paper napkins are a single-use item that adds up quickly. By using cloth napkins, I’ve drastically reduced the amount of waste my family creates. Bonus: they also save money over time since I’m no longer buying disposable napkins week after week.

4. Practicality Wins

Cloth napkins might seem fancy, but they’re incredibly practical. I keep a stack of them in a basket on the table so they’re always within reach. After meals, we toss the used ones downstairs in the laundry room. I wash them with our regular loads of laundry, so there’s no extra hassle.

5. They Make Meals Feel Special

There’s something about using cloth napkins that elevates even the simplest meal. It’s a small change, but it makes everyday dinners feel more intentional. Plus, with so many colors and patterns available, it’s easy to match them to your style or change things up for different seasons or holidays.

Tips for Starting With Cloth Napkins:

  • Start Small: You don’t need a huge collection to start. A set of 12-16 napkins is plenty for a small family. These are my favorite because they are thin enough to fit in our drawer (I have three sets now!) and they give an Anthropologie look for way less money! They also wash so well…I’m not going to be ironing napkins in this house! haha!

  • Choose Washable Fabrics: Look for napkins made from cotton or linen that can handle frequent washing.

  • Keep It Simple: Don’t worry about ironing or folding napkins perfectly. Everyday use is about ease, not perfection.

  • Involve the Family: Show your kids how to use and fold napkins. They’ll feel more invested in the change if they’re part of it.

Switching to cloth napkins has been a simple and impactful change for my family. It’s practical, cost-effective, and makes mealtimes feel a little more special. If you’ve been on the fence, I encourage you to give it a try. You might find, like I did, that you never want to go back to paper. Let me know what you think!
