My Word of the Year: NOW
As we step into a new year, I’ve chosen a word to guide my days and decisions: NOW.
It’s a simple word, but one that holds incredible power. It reminds me to stop procrastinating, to be present in the moment, and to take action on what truly matters instead of waiting for the “perfect” time. With a 14 and 16-year-old, I am very aware of how fast time is going by!
We often find ourselves saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “Someday, I’ll start that project, chase that dream, or take care of myself.” But what about now? This year, I’m embracing the idea that now is the best time to start, to savor, and to live. I also find that anxiety can get the best of me when I think too much about the future, so I know that this will help keep that in check too! Plus, what a simple word to say to myself when I need it, right?
If you’ve never chosen a word of the year, it’s a wonderful way to set an intention without the pressure of rigid resolutions. Here are some tips for finding the word that will inspire and ground you in the months ahead.
1. Reflect on the Past Year
Take a few moments to think about the highs and lows of the past year. What lessons did you learn? What patterns or habits do you want to change? What brought you joy or fulfillment? Your word can serve as a response to these reflections—a way to carry the lessons forward or set a new tone.
2. Think About How You Want to Feel
Words like “joyful,” “aligned,” or “balanced” might resonate if you’re looking to focus on emotional well-being. Do you want to feel more calm, inspired, or confident this year? Let that feeling guide your choice.
3. Consider Your Goals
What do you hope to accomplish this year? Whether it’s personal growth, career advancement, or deeper relationships, your word can act as a compass. Words like “build,” “focus,” or “connect” could align with your aspirations.
4. Keep It Simple
A good word of the year should be easy to remember and resonate deeply with you. One word is all you need to remind yourself of your intentions throughout the year.
5. Be Flexible
Your word doesn’t have to define everything you do, and it’s okay if it evolves as the year unfolds. Think of it as a guide rather than a rule.
My Tips for Living in the NOW
Since my word is NOW, I’ve set a few intentions to help me embrace it:
Tackle small tasks immediately. If it takes less than five minutes, I’ll do it right away instead of letting it pile up.
Be present. Put away distractions when spending time with loved ones or enjoying simple moments.
Take action on dreams. Stop waiting for the “right” time to start. The right time is now.
