My Top 5 Summer Reads

I love to read all year, but I especially love a good beach read. I am, however, picky about what I read and don’t just want fluff! Here are my top 5 summer reads! Some are new to me and some are oldies that I have read repeatedly!

The first author is known for her beachy books, all of which take place on the island of Nantucket! What’s more summery than that? Elin Hilderbrand has written dozens of books and I have now officially read them all. If you’re new to her books, I wanted to share my favorites as a starting point, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them! Keep reading for descriptions of each!

1. Elin Hilderbrand: Swan Song

Elin Hilderbrand is a master of summer fiction, and ‘Swan Song’ is no exception. This is the most recent and final novel in her Nantucket series, so I was buying this at the store the day it came out. It did not disappoint! This novel takes you to the idyllic shores of Nantucket, where a group of lifelong friends gathers for one final summer. As they reminisce about their shared past and confront their individual futures, you’ll find yourself engrossed in their stories of love, loss, and rediscovery. Hilderbrand’s vivid descriptions and intricate character dynamics make *Swan Song* a must-read for anyone looking to escape into a heartwarming, thought-provoking tale. You’ll want to get a ferry to Nantucket immediately so you can see it for yourself too!

2. Elin Hilderbrand: Summer of '69

Another gem from Elin Hilderbrand, ‘Summer of '69’ transports you back to the tumultuous summer of 1969. Follow the Levin family as they navigate personal and societal changes during this historic time. From the moon landing to the Vietnam War, this novel weaves real historical events with the fictional lives of the Levin family, creating a rich tapestry of nostalgia and emotion. The detailed setting and compelling narrative will keep you turning the pages, making it a perfect addition to your summer reading list. I’m a big historical fiction fan, so this one mixes my love of that with summer fun!

3. Elin Hilderbrand: 28 Summers

In ‘28 Summers’, Elin Hilderbrand tells the story of a love affair that spans nearly three decades. Mallory Blessing and Jake McCloud agree to spend one weekend together every summer, no matter where life takes them. Inspired by the film *Same Time, Next Year*, their relationship is a poignant exploration of love, timing, and the choices we make. As you follow their journey through the years, you’ll find yourself reflecting on your own life and the moments that define it. Hilderbrand’s ability to capture the essence of summer and the complexities of love shines brightly in this unforgettable novel. I loved this one so much! Just a very different perspective you don’t often see in fiction books.

This next author and book is a classic and I share this book every year. I have read Summer Sisters, by Judy Blume every year since it was published in 1998! I love it so much. I made Joe take me to Martha’s Vineyard just to see some of the things mentioned in the book! haha! I also have the original paperback with my maiden name written inside! This is one of those books I will pass down to my daughter. I hope you love it too!

4. Judy Blume: Summer Sisters

Judy Blume’s ‘Summer Sisters’ is a captivating coming-of-age story about the lifelong friendship between Vix Leonard and Caitlin Somers. Every summer, Vix is invited to Caitlin’s family’s home on Martha’s Vineyard, where they share their dreams, secrets, and adventures. As the years pass, their bond is tested by love, betrayal, and the choices they make. Blume’s rich storytelling and deep understanding of the complexities of female friendship make ‘Summer Sisters’ a poignant and engaging read that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

This final author is new to me this year and as soon as I picked this book up, I was hooked! I’m excited to explore her other books as well!

5. Carley Fortune: Every Summer After

Carley Fortune’s ‘Every Summer After’ is a beautifully written story about love, loss, and second chances. Set in a charming lakeside town, this novel follows the lives of Persephone Fraser and Sam Florek, who were inseparable every summer until a tragic event tore them apart. Years later, they are reunited and must confront their past and the feelings that never truly faded. Fortune’s evocative prose and deeply emotional narrative make ‘Every Summer After’ a perfect read for those who enjoy a heartfelt, nostalgic journey.

These five books are sure to enhance your summer with their captivating stories and memorable characters. Whether you’re in the mood for a historical drama, a tale of enduring friendship, or a bittersweet romance, there’s something on this list for everyone. So grab your favorite drink, find a cozy spot, and dive into these wonderful reads that will transport you to different times, places, and emotions.
