How To Series: Make Scent Booster (For Your Landry)
One of the biggest changes we made in our home, that made the biggest impact on my health, was switching up our laundry routine. I used to take 5 allergy medications a day and had no seasonal allergies (I was tested for these.). When I ditched fragrance in our home (specifically our laundry) I was able to ditch my medicine after three months.
So what’s the deal with the scent beads you buy at the store?
These are marketed as a way to ‘freshen’ your laundry and claim the scent will last up to 12 weeks on your laundry. The problem with that is that these are made with fragrance and chemicals that bind to our clothing, sheets, and towels. These chemicals are known hormone disrupters, allergens, and can aggravate asthma and headaches too!
4 other dangers of store bought scent boosters
1) Itching/rash/allergies: The word ‘fragrance’ on an ingredient list can contain 1000s of chemicals. There is just no way to know what is in the fragrance being used, they are not required to disclose that. There are many reports of skin issues and allergy issues after using these.
2) Not good for your clothes: Theses scent beads are not necessary to get clothes clean. Over time, they can damage clothing fibers because they are made to bind to clothing.
3) Clog or damage your washing machine: With prolonged use, they can mess up your washing machine.
4) Toxic if eaten: If pets or children happened to eat these, they are toxic and require a call to poison control.
If you want to make your own, here is my favorite recipe! The good thing about making this is that you won’t have chemicals clinging to your clothes. It also will clean and freshen your clothing in addition to your laundry soap.
I have made this many times over on Instagram with different containers and different scents! Watch it here, here, or here!
