Keeping your home clean and fresh doesn't have to involve harsh chemicals. Baking soda, a pantry staple, can work wonders in cleaning and deodorizing various parts of your home. Here are three simple and effective ways to use baking soda for a cleaner, fresher living space.

1. Rug Refresher

Over time, rugs can absorb odors and become dingy. Baking soda is a safe and natural way to freshen them up. Simply sprinkle baking soda with some added essential oils for scent if you wish, (I love orange oil), evenly over the rug's surface and let it sit for about 15-30 minutes to allow it to absorb odors. Then, vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove the baking soda and dirt, leaving your rug smelling fresh and clean. I do this very lightly and every few months because if you overdo it, it can damage your vacuum. Floor recipes are here.

2. Sink Cleaner

Baking soda is an excellent abrasive cleaner that can help remove grime and stains from sinks without scratching the surface. To clean your sink, sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge or cloth and scrub the sink in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a clean cloth. Baking soda not only cleans but also helps neutralize odors, leaving your sink sparkling clean and smelling fresh. I also make a cleaning paste with equal parts baking soda and Thieves cleaner to get the really dirty spots.

3. Drain Refresher

Clogged and smelly drains can be a nuisance, but baking soda can help. Pour about half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. Allow the mixture to fizz and bubble for a few minutes to help break down any buildup. I put a wash cloth on top to keep it going down. Then, flush the drain with hot water to wash away the residue. This simple method helps keep your drains clear and odor-free.

Benefits of Baking Soda Over Chemicals

1. Environmentally Friendly: Baking soda is a natural, biodegradable substance, making it safer for the environment compared to many chemical cleaners.

2. Gentle Yet Effective: Baking soda is gentle enough to use on a variety of surfaces, including carpets and sinks, without causing damage.

3. Cost-Effective: Baking soda is an affordable alternative to commercial cleaning products, saving you money in the long run.

4. Odor Neutralizer: Baking soda naturally neutralizes odors, rather than masking them with artificial fragrances.

5. Versatile: Baking soda can be used for a wide range of cleaning tasks, making it a versatile addition to your cleaning arsenal.

In conclusion, baking soda is a powerful, natural cleaner that can tackle a variety of cleaning tasks around your home. By using baking soda instead of harsh chemicals, you can create a cleaner, fresher living environment for you and your family. I love that it’s safe for my cats and also that my kids can help me clean without the worry of chemicals.
