In today's fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become all too common. Finding ways to calm the nervous system is essential for maintaining overall well-being. While there are many methods to promote relaxation, one simple and effective practice is the topical application of essential oils. I do this every morning and it’s such an easy way to set the tone for the day and I literally feel my system calm down.
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts that have been used for centuries for their therapeutic properties. When applied to the skin, essential oils can be absorbed into the bloodstream and have a direct impact on the nervous system. They reach the limbic system of the brain where our memories are stored. Isn’t that cool?
Here are some ways in which topical application of essential oils can help calm your nervous system:
1. Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Certain essential oils, such as lavender and chamomile, are known for their calming properties. When applied to the skin, these oils can help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of relaxation. My favorite oil for this is Northern Lights Black Spruce. This tree oil is very grounding and calming. You can really use whatever oil speaks to you.
2. Promote Relaxation: Massaging essential oils into the skin can help promote relaxation by relieving muscle tension and soothing the senses. I like to apply daily to my wrists and the back of my neck. I also inhale from my hands and put the excess in my hair.
3. Improve Mood: Essential oils like bergamot and ylang-ylang are known for their mood-boosting properties. Applying these oils topically can help uplift your mood and reduce feelings of sadness or depression.
4. Enhance Mindfulness: The act of applying essential oils to the skin can be a form of self-care and mindfulness. Taking a moment to massage the oils into your skin can help you relax and connect with your body, promoting a sense of calmness and well-being.
To incorporate the topical application of essential oils into your routine, simply dilute a few drops of your chosen oil in a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, and massage it into your skin. Focus on areas such as the temples, wrists, and neck for maximum effect. I also just apply straight up.
It's important to note that essential oils are potent and should be used with caution. Always dilute essential oils before applying them to the skin, and perform a patch test to check for any potential allergic reactions. I’m used to them, so I tend to be liberal with applying them but if you’re new, go slowly.
I’d love to hear if you incorporate this into your routine. It’ such an easy way to calm yourself every day.
